The Community Foundation for Ireland came up trumps in November 2011 and granted us 1,000 euro for the construction of raised beds in the Kitchen Garden. We constructed these over the Spring and they were all in situ by Summer 2012.
Most of the design (and donkey work) was down to Shane and Mick but lots of other garden members dipped in and out on the project as well.
The pics below bring you through each stage of the project. See alongside Shane's fantastic original concept and plans. There were some amends along the way but it gives you some idea of the planning and thought that went into the whole project.
The raised beds not only add a point of interest and difference in the garden but more importantly ensure that members with some physical disability or impairment are also able to play a full and active role in the planting and development of the garden.
In 2013 and 2014 we hope to introduce more, lower-level raised beds into the garden as these have proved so successful.
