The Heritage Orchard in the Walled Garden of Santry Demesne

Picture
We are replanting the Orchard in the second part of the garden with a selection of native heritage variety fruit trees and bushes. We already have 200 trees planted, over 100 of which have been sponsored by friends of the Garden. But there are many more to be done and lots of space!

We have been given access to a beautiful and valuable document (below) which maps out what was planted in the Orchard in the 1860’s and we will be following this as closely as possible as well as introducing other types of tree not previously planted but which are important in terms of carrying on Irish heritage varieties. We have an expert tree pruner who is on hand to ensure our trees grow strong and beautiful and will be in place for many years to come.

We are also grafting and planting the UCD Irish Heritage Variety Apple  collection in the garden - when it's complete it will be one of only 4 copies of this collection in Ireland. We only have to source another 5 or 6 trees before this is complete.

Heritage variety fruit trees can be difficult and expensive to source but the generosity of sponsors means our orchard is looking beautiful and very well populated.

_What You Get

Each sponsored tree costs €50 and has a discreet aluminium marker which notes the tree variety, the person who it has been sponsored for and a short commemoration message.

The €50 cost will cover a heritage variety tree, compost, stakes, ties etc, the ongoing care of the tree and the cost of the markers (which have been sourced from a traditional botanical plant tag supplier). Once money has cleared, a Sponsorship Certificate will be issued by post, along with information about the Heritage Orchard and the Walled Garden.

Click here to see the map of the trees in our orchard if you'd like to choose a particular tree, and here to see details of the varieties in the garden.

Tree Sponsorship in the Heritage Orchard

Tree Sponsorship is a wonderful way to demonstrate your thanks and appreciation to someone. It makes a thoughtful and unusual gift for ‘the person who has everything’ or for friends and family who are passionate about the environment, gardening, sustainable living or who have an interest in Irish horticultural heritage.

It can also be a lovely way to commemorate someone special and ensure that in a peaceful spot within the walls of the Santry Demesne walled garden their name will live on and there is a pleasant place where friends and family can visit to see how their tree is getting on.

However memorabilia, ornaments, bouquets or other items cannot be left at the trees and the aluminium markers cannot be individualised or enlarged in any
way. We need to make sure the markings are uniform. The area is first and foremost a heritage orchard and not a memorial garden. We think this adds to the beauty and charm of the plot, it's an informal, peaceful place where nature comes first.

Payment

If you would like to sponsor a tree(s) there are two ways you can do this. You can either print off and fill in this form and give it to one of the committee members when the garden is open.  We can only accept cheques or cash for this option.

Alternatively if you’d prefer to do it online please click on the green 'buy now' button below this paragraph.

If you wish to sponsor more than one tree there is an option for multiple amounts at checkout.

When you go through the PayPal process there is a small button at the bottom of your address details which says 'Note to Seller'.  You can add the commemoration wording here and also request a particular tree.

However if you have any issues and can't do this, please process the order as best you can and drop us an email with any supplementary information or requests for clarification at
santrycommunitygarden@gmail.com

Thank you for your support!

Don't have a Paypal Account

If you are paying by credit/debit card this does need to go through Paypal but if you don’t have a Paypal account, there is a way round it.  Just follow these steps:

Choose the PayPal Option during checkout. After you submit your order click the "Pay Now" button. Scroll down and you will see the option to pay with a Credit or Debit Card WITHOUT having to sign up for a PayPal account.
