Jerusalem Artichoke anyone? Yes, I know they sound outlandish and look rather uninviting and knobbly but Jamie Oliver assures us that they are ‘sweet, almost garlicky, mushroomy and gorgeous’. So why not take a look this recipe leaflet for ideas on how to cook these and some other vegetables currently being harvested. There are loads more recipes and information about the vegetables currently in season on our website http://www.santrycommunitygarden.ie/recipes.html Why not come along to the garden this weekend with a big shopping bag, pick your produce and get experimenting?
Also, on the theme of good food, we are planning a Hallowe’en event for Saturday 29th at 2.30pm. We have 15-20 gorgeous pumpkins that are all ready to be carved and turned into scary lanterns for Hallowe’en and all we need now are some willing helpers to come along and get creative. So if you have children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren etc who would like to try their hand why not come along to the garden next weekend. We’ll have a few carving kits for children but if you have any tools yourself it would be great if you could bring them along. (All are welcome but undertake these activities at their own risk and we ask that parents/guardians are responsible for minors.)
In addition to the pumpkin carving we will also be having an autumn bbq with (hopefully) soup, sausages and some other warming dishes made with garden produce for us all to feast on. But we are looking for volunteers who can contribute some dishes. So if you are able to cook something why not come along to the garden this weekend to select some produce which can be used in your dish. Or let us know you’ll be bringing something along by return mail to this address.
We'll have a large bbq all stoked up with charcoal and our trusty gas ring but if people could actually cook/prepare the dishes at home so they just need 'warming up' that would be ideal. We might be able to organise to get dishes brought up by the rangers if we ask them nicely so if you'll need some help let us know. All contributions are welcome!
And finally …. fancy dress is optional.
Looking forward to seeing you all then if not before.
