I just thought I would give you an update on how the awards visit went yesterday.
As you know, Fingal County Council entered us into these national awards and we were visited by the Judges on a particularly warm and beautiful summer's afternoon. The bunting fluttered, the scones were laid out and the garden looked magnificent. Of course the time of year and the good weather helped but all our hardworking members did a sterling job of cleaning paths, weeding, edging and tidying and it really made a difference. We had some new signage prepared for the event and we even had some water in our pond (for the first time in nearly 150 years!) and about 25 members turned out to welcome our visitors (judges and FCC Officials) all of whom were very impressed at People Power in Action.
It's a National competition and we were entered into the Eco category so at this stage it's difficult to know whether we stand a chance - it will all depend on the competition. The awards aren't announced until November so we will just have to wait and see. But you know, I don't think it really matters whether we do win or not (although a bit of prize money wouldn't go amiss) - the important thing is it gave us an opportunity to showcase our wonderful garden and I don't think I could be happier with what we have achieved so far.
I put a copy of the PowerPoint presentation we prepared for them on the website so if you want to see it check it out here:
But really this mail is just to say well done and a huge and heartfelt thank you to all of wonderful members who contributed their time and their skills to make our garden such a beautiful place to be and such a successful initiative.
Thanks too to the Conservation Volunteers but I won't name any particular individual members because there are too many of you! That's what makes us so fantastic - it's not just down to one or two committed nutters who let it take over their lives (mea culpa), it's because there are swathes of fantastic people out there who help where they can and offer us such a huge variety of skills and input. You know who you are!
Obviously the weather is wonderful at the moment and the garden is decked out in all it's summer finery so please come, see, marvel .... and weed!
With all good wishes,
Donna and the SCG Committee
