Back in June 2010, the garden was barren and bare - a locked up, empty, plot of land. A few fruit trees and the beautiful walls were all that gave a hint of what the place had once been. And look at it now!
We have a kitchen garden stuffed to the gills with gorgeous vegetables, a beautiful herb garden and a tranquil heritage orchard filled with 150 beautiful trees and soft fruit bushes. The nerve centre of operations is The Shed, the walls lined with tools and decorated with planting plans. Our polytunnel houses seedlings and at present is home to tomatoes, salads and strawberries. The garden is alive with the sound of birds singing, people laughing and bees humming happily. We have built the first of four raised beds for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility and our R&R area is slowly (but surely!) coming along.
We have been teaching members tree pruning skills, nurturing a supply of willow, we've got our wildlife area set up so we can reintroduce frogs and other wildlife back to the garden and most important of all, the garden is once again a hub of activity and life with lots of regular gardeners and a steady trickle of new blood to keep us on our toes. How many cups of tea have been drunk and jokes shared around our pallet table I wonder? We've held some great community events - our open day in August and pumpkin carving day in October plus various Planting Days have been popular and have demonstrated what a valuable community amenity the garden offers.
So it's safe to say your garden has been a great success. But the story isn't over yet, far from it. In order to keep the garden going we need new members and plenty of our old friends ongoing support. Attached is a poster for the garden and we'd be very grateful if you could print a couple of copies and perhaps arrange to get it displayed in your local shop/pub/library/workplace. Do you know a friend or neighbour who might be interested in joining? Perhaps you could pass on the information and encourage them to come up and see us.
Finally, thanks to each and everyone of you for your support, encouragement and help over the past two years - we couldn't have done it without you!
